What's New in Princeton & Central New Jersey?
Reprinted from the July 27, 2011, issue of U.S. 1 Newspaper
Avoiding the Obvious On the New Jersey Turnpike

by Tony Gruenewald

Because of the overnight construction,

five lanes of traffic were being threaded

through the eye of a single lane.

And from behind the lights

of the radio mentioning

every delay but the one I was in,

All I could see was

an assuredly God-sent sign,

a panoramic view of

A pig’s behind

painted across the back

of the tractor-trailor

Directly ahead of me,

Leaving me with slowly moving

miles and miles of nothing to do

but try to ignore

the Lord’s metaphor

for how I’ve been living my life.

Tony Gruenewald works for Learning Ally, formerly Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic. He is the author of “The Secret History of New Jersey” (Northwind) that includes several poems first published in U.S. 1. Visit him at tonygruenewald.com
