Two local hospital centers are taking their first steps toward moving from downtowns to the suburbs. Capital Health System is breaking ground for its new Hopewell medical center on Friday, October 31, and Princeton HealthCare System has named an executive to oversee its move to Route 1 in Plainsboro.
Capital Health’s new hospital will rise on a 165-acre tract of land that it purchased from Merrill Lynch. It will replace Mercer Hospital in Trenton, a 112-year-old facility with a clientele that includes a number of uninsured people. Mercer Hospital’s sister facility in Trenton, Fuld Hospital, will be renovated and upgraded at the same time that the new hospital is being built in Hopewell, says Donald MacNeill, Capital Health’s director of communications.
Capital Health had originally planned to make a move to the suburbs by building a new hospital on Princess Road in Lawrence. It received a certificate of need from the state, allowing it to make that move, in 2006. That certificate was transferred to the Hopewell site in July, 2007.
MacNeill says that construction on the new hospital, which is located just a few minutes from the Scotch Road exit of I-95, has already begun. It will include a six-story patient tower, where, in accordance with trends in hospital construction, every room will be private, and a medical office building. It is scheduled to open in 2011.

Mark Jones has been recruited by the University Medical Center at Princeton to serve as its most senior executive, reporting to Barry Rabner, the medical center’s CEO. Jones assumes the titles of president of University Medical Center at Princeton (UMCP) and senior vice president of PHCS.
He will be responsible for cultivating the necessary partnerships with staff and physicians to facilitate a successful move to the medical center’s new facility on Route 1 and will lead the development of the operating systems to be put in place in the replacement hospital.
Jones worked in senior leadership positions at Holy Redeemer Health System since 1984. For the past nine years, he has been executive vice president and chief operating officer of the Holy Redeemer system.
Prior to joining Holy Redeemer, Jones was vice president of operations at Greater Baltimore Medical Center (GBMC) and vice president of Presbyterian-University Hospital of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He completed his administrative residency at Presbyterian in 1981.
Jones holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from Edinboro University in Pennsylvania, a master’s degree in biology from Dusquesne University and a master’s degree in hospital administration from Columbia University.
