VaxInnate has named Wayne Pisano, above, as its new president and CEO. Pisano replaces Thomas Hofstaetter, who retired at the end of 2011 after two years as president and CEO.
Pisano, who is also on the board of directors, was the president and CEO of Sanofi Pasteur, a division of Sanofi-Aventis Group and the world’s largest vaccine business.
Pisano called VaxInnate “a company that’s poised to become a significant player in the flu vaccine arena thanks to its game-changing vaccine technology,” Pisano said.
“VaxInnate is very well positioned, given its contract with the U.S. government to develop flu vaccines,” he says. “In addition, VaxInnate’s Dengue vaccine (for Dengue Fever) is showing great promise in preclinical studies and is expected to enter Phase I trials next year.”
Pisano began his career with Sanofi in 1997 and held a series of progressively more senior positions while there, culminating in his appointment as division president and CEO in 2007. He retired from that role in 2011.
Under Pisano’s leadership, more than a billion doses of Sanofi Pasteur vaccines were administered annually to 500 million people throughout the world, representing more than 25 percent of the global vaccine market.
In addition to his responsibilities at Sanofi, Pisano served on the supervisory board of Sanofi Pasteur MSD, a joint venture with Merck that markets and distributes vaccines in Europe.
Pisano also spent a significant portion of his career in the pharmaceutical division of Novartis (Sandoz). He holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from St. John Fisher College, and an MBA from the University of Dayton, Ohio. He lives in Asbury.
VaxInnate is a privately held biotech company that is developing technology for novel and proprietary vaccines.
The company focuses on infectious diseases, including seasonal and pandemic flu, dengue, malaria, and clostridium difficile. The technology has the potential to improve the potency, manufacturing capacity, and cost-effectiveness of vaccines.
In 2011, a contract worth up to $196 million over five years was awarded to VaxInnate by the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, to fund the development of seasonal and pandemic flu vaccines using recombinant technology.

Andrew Hurd has been named as the new president and CEO of Epocrates, the San Mateo, CA, company with offices in Princeton South Corporate Center, Ewing.
Peter Brandt, former interim president and CEO, left the positions on March 27 and took on the newly-created role of vice chairman of the board of directors. Brandt said he will work closely with Hurd to provide strategic counsel and ensure a smooth transition.

Epocrates develops mobile health software applications for health care providers that are focused on providing them with reference information about drugs, diseases, and diagnostic tools. The Epocrates network consists of 1.4 million active members, including some 50 percent of physicians in the United States who routinely use its services.
Hurd joins Epocrates from Carefx. where he served as chairman and CEO for more than six years. Previously, he held senior management positions at WebMD Corp, CenterBeam, and QuadraMed Corporation. He also currently serves on the board of directors for ABILITY Network.

Pennington Insurance Services, W. Scott Miller CIC AAI, president.
Pennington Insurance Services has merged with Lawrenceville-based Borden Perlman Insurance,. Pennington Insurance, formerly on Route 31 in Pennington, will now operate under the Borden Perlman name and operate out of the company’s Lenox Drive headquarters.
Borden Perlman represents more than 30 A-Rated insurances carriers and specializes in commercial, personal and sports accident insurance.
“Although Borden Perlman and Pennington Insurance Services have separate histories, both companies have strong roots in the greater Mercer County region and have always shared a common objective: to ensure absolute customer satisfaction,” said Doug Borden, co-founder and managing director of Borden Perlman.

Arthur Bruce Nadelson, 66, died on Saturday, March 31. Nadelson maintained a private dental practice in Ewing for 25 years, retiring in 2011. Nadelson worked as a carpenter and cabinet-maker in Martha's Vineyard, MA, before going back to school and earning his DMD from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in 1985. He also continued as a woodworker and built furniture and boats in his personal workshop.
