Drama Calls

Washington Crossing Park seeks applications from history buffs interested in portraying George Washington for three years. Do you have what it takes to represent such a historical figure? A competition to select the next General Washington will be held on Thursday, September 13. The selected will serve as General Washington during the annual Christmas crossing and other obligations. An alternate will also be chosen to fill the role when the primary George Washington is unavailable. For more information on the selection process call 215-493-4076. Master Gardeners

Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Mercer County offers a 21-week training program for Mercer County residents from September to March. Trainees receive more than 60 hours of instruction in a variety of horticultural subjects. The teaching staff includes Mercer County Horticulturist Barbara J. Bromley, County agricultural agents, faculty from Rutgers, and other horticultural experts. Classes meet Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Mercer County Cooperative Extension office, 930 Spruce Street, Lawrence.

Following the classroom instruction, trainees volunteer 60 hours with Mercer County Extension or related programs, including at least 30 hours providing information on the Rutgers Master Gardener Helpline. Trainees also volunteer five hours of composting service at the Mercer Educational Gardens in Pennington.

Health

CentraState Healthcare System is participating in the American Cancer Society’s Epidemiology Research Program-Cancer Prevention Study-3. Men and women between the ages of 30 and 65 who have no personal history of cancer are invited to participate in the historic cancer research study. The purpose of the study is to better understand the lifestyle, behavioral, environmental, and genetic factors that cause or prevent cancer.

Interested participants must schedule an enrollment appointment and receive instructions on how to first complete the comprehensive online survey. Enrollment appointments will be scheduled for Tuesday, July 24, from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m., or Wednesday, July 25, from 2 to 7 p.m. at 901 West Main Street, Freehold. Appointments will also be offered on Thursday, July 26, from noon to 5 p.m. at CentraState’s Medical Office at 312 Applegarth Road, Monroe. For Seniors

Jewish Family & Children’s Service has established Patient Partners, a program that will have trained volunteers accompany older adults to doctors’ appointments and medical procedures. Volunteers will meet with patients to review concerns, medications, and medical history. In the medical center the volunteers will take notes, request translation of medical jargon, confirm that the patient has a full understanding of what transpired at the visit, and provide emotional supports. Mercer County offers senior citizens the opportunity to receive fresh-produce checks that will enable them to purchase locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables at participating farm stands. Representatives from the Mercer County Nutrition Office will offer the checks on Friday, June 29, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., at the Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, 801 West State Street, Trenton. Eligible senior citizens will receive checks to redeem $20 in fresh produce at various vendor sites throughout the county. Vouchers will be distributed in four $5 denominations and are valid until November 30.

There will be additional distribution sites and dates throughout Mercer County that will include some of the senior housing communities and other specially selected locations. A single person’s income must not exceed $20,147 per year or $1,679 monthly; a couple’s income must not exceed $27,214 per year or $2,268 monthly.
